Come join us and your fellow animators for an afternoon of the greatest new animation from around the world!
Ron scoured the globe to bring you this two hour program featuring 16 outstanding shorts. Nine films from top studios including Aardman and Walt Disney will be shown with seven student films gathered from Hungary, France and the world.
It's ASIFA-Seattle's inaugural event, celebrating International Animation Day (October 28th). You won't want to miss these films. Download Film Program (252K)

Due to the scheduling of the Animation Show of Shows, we have postponed the Animation-Jam.
It will be rescheduled in the next couple of months.

Animation Camera
The Northwest Film Forum has a new animation room with a Fax Animation Stand. It's an old school rostrum camera similar to an Oxberry. It has been updated with a dedicated digital video camera and a mac with framethief software. The stand is capable of doing 2-d and 3-d animation under the camera using the table's many movements.

911 Media Arts Center: Workshops
It's Alive! Hands on Animation
4 Mondays, November 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th 6-9:30pm

In this class you will learn the foundations of traditional 2-d animation technique and practice. At the core of animation are the basic principles of motion and time. This hands-on class will examine classic techniques necessary on all levels of animation. Over the course you will familiarize yourself with the Zoetrope and the Lunchbox Animation System. Including tips, tricks, techniques and practical methods, you will leave this course a proficient animator. Come enter the world of endless imagination and countless possibilities that can only exist in the hands of an animator. Easy to learn and fun to make, it you don?t know how already - now is the time! This class is open to all skill levels. No previous experience in drawing or film required.
Intermediate After Effects I: Topics in Motion Graphics
5 Wednesdays, November 7 - December 5, 6-9pm

Now that you are a whiz at compositing layers, animating and applying effects in Adobe After Effects it's time to dig into specific areas and continue to gain fluency in this mighty box of tools. Topics include: basic expressions, text animation, time effects, masks, text along a path, and effects. You will also learn how to create drawn-on sketches from photos, bring your work into 3D and add lights, cameras and shadows. This workshop will provide you with the skills you need to give your projects a professional stamp.

Hands on Animation Lab: Stop Motion

This stop motion animation workshop will cover the basics of animation with clay, puppets, and other three-dimensional objects. We will explore character and puppet construction techniques. Additionally we will cover the use of camera and lights for effective storytelling. Lastly we will cover the use of The Animation Lunchbox for capture of your animation. Included in this class is the use of 4 hours of animation time at 911 Media.
This class is open to all skill levels. No previous experience in drawing or film required.

This cut out animation workshop will cover two dimensional animation with cut out collage paper and other animation materials. Animation could also include rice, beads, sand or other experimental mediums. We will cover puppet construction techniques and other material animation methods. We will also explore the use of The Animation Lunchbox for capture of your animation. Included in this class is the use of 4 hours of animation time at 911 Media.
This class is open to all skill levels. No previous experience in drawing or film required.

Introduction to Flash
Four Mondays, Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 6:30-9:30pm

Prerequiste: Basic knowledge of Photoshop and a vector-based drawing program (Illustrator, Freehand)
Flash is the premiere software for animating different media formats-photography, line art, sound and video-for the web. Learn the basic skills of Flash's robust animation tools to incorporate in the interactive environment of a website. With hands-on learning in class and between class assignments, you'll learn how to create animations starting from storyboards and a project plan, navigate the Flash environment, determine the best production methods, and put into motion your most creative ideas. During the class, students will each develop individual projects under the guidance of the instructor, and by the end of this introduction, you will feel comfortable with Flash's comprehensive set of tools to really begin exploring new realms of animation and interactivity.
After Effects Basics

AfterEffects is a powerful 2D animation and compositing tool, with a wide range of applications. Commonly used for film, television and multimedia, this program can be difficult to crack at first, but once the basics are mastered, it offers a seemingly inexhaustible depth of possibilities. We'll be learning, from the ground up, how to combine and manipulate footage, animate typography, and use other elements to composite visually rich motion graphics, which can then be output to a variety of formats.
Optical Printer Basics
Two Saturdays, Dec. 1 & 8, 12-3pm

A comprehensive look at NWFF's JK 103 Optical Printer for 16mm and Super 8mm Film. The optical printer is an age-old device for printing the image from one roll of film onto another roll. This allows for multiple special effects techniques including multiple exposures, step and skip printing for speed changes and strobing effects, color effects, and traveling matte tricks. The class will cover both functionality and stylistic techniques with hands-on assignments and clips of work that the class will view of some of experimental film's masters. Students are encouraged to bring some S8 or 16mm footage to experiment with, preferably black and white.

Girls Night In (Animation)
A festival and celebration of the work by women in the animation industry!
Seeking footage by professional or student female animators/designers/directors as part of the 2d OR NOT 2D Animation Festival. The Animaticus Foundation is producing a film montage of animation and artwork created by women in the industry, past and present. They seek well-crafted clips for the program.
The prefered formats for submittions are MOV or AVI files. However, most other digital formats will be acceptable. All material should be sent on disk to:
